Snyder Printer Celebrates 120 Years in Business

PIA Vice Chair Dona Snyder-Reardon, President of Snyder Printer in Troy, was interviewed for the Capital Region Business Beat.  The story aired on Thursday, January 15, 2015.  Click here to watch the broadcast.   Read on for the text of the interview.  Congratulations on 120 years in business!

TROY, N.Y. — In 1895, Walter Snyder of Troy had a dream.

With $800, Snyder started his own business on River Street; Walter Snyder Printer.

120 years later, the printing company is still operating with Snyder’s family at the helm.

“The company was started by my great-grandfather in 1895 and has been in the family every since,” said Snyder Printer President Dona Reardon. “Currently, we have three 5th generation employees as well.”

Despite moving several times, the business has never left River Street. It once operated at what many now know as Brown’s Brewing Company.

Today, it has 22 employees and does about every type of printing job for businesses, colleges and organizations.

As you can imagine, the printing business has changed over the years.

“I remember, as a little girl, a man sitting in front of a type machine setting lead type. Lead type gave way, then linotype, then we went to film and now we’re strictly metal plates. It’s just amazing where the technology is going and with addition of digital, it’s a whole new world,” Reardon said.

Snyder Printer puts an emphasis on being environmentally friendly, and safe on the job. It uses ink that has 100% natural raw materials, and it’s the only printer in New York on OSHA’s “SHARP” list, recognizing exceptional injury and illness prevention programs.

“Best kept secret for 120 years and we continue to grow.”

Reardon said there’s no fear that a digital world will slow down the presses.

“People want tangible. People want to touch and feel and our results are coming back that print is actually growing and we hope it continues.”

Reardon hopes it continues at least for another 120 years, and more.
