Do you print for SUNY, “I Love NY”, State Insurance Fund, Erie County Medical Center, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York State Department of Health (or any publicly funded entity in New York State)?

If so, this work is in jeopardy! Even if you don’t print for one of these taxpayer-funded organizations, this issue should concern you.

New York State Industries for the Disabled (NYSID) has filed an application to become a “Preferred Source” for all state and local taxpayer funded digital printing from these entities, and others like it, which will be produced for mail delivery.

As a “Preferred Source”, NYSID will be first in line for projects such as:

- Personalized mailed material for SUNY

- Personalized mailed registration information for the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles

- Personalized mailed billing information for the local water authority

- Personalized mailed invitations to a local public museum fundraiser

The list is pretty endless!

If you don’t act immediately, this will become a reality!

Under New York State law, a “Preferred Source” vendor takes precedence over all other preference designations, including “Women Owned”, Minority Owned” and of course, just “Owned”.

Here is what you need to do right now!

- Write your New York State legislators (click here for pre-written letter)

Then write New York State Office of General Services Commissioner RoAnn Destito to express your concern:  (click here for pre-written letter)

If you wish to write your own letter to Commissioner Destito, her address is:

Commissioner RoAnn Destito
New York State Office of General Services
41st Floor, Corning Tower
Empire State Plaza
Albany, NY 12242

Time is of the essence! A final decision on this issue will be made at a New York State Procurement Council on July 14, 2016. Please voice your concern about the loss of well-paying manufacturing jobs and the elimination of competition that will be caused if the NYSID application is approved.

They Need to Hear From You! Please feel free to circulate this blog to colleagues or employees and encourage them to act.

Quality Bindery & Mailing Services (QBS), Buffalo, NY was featured in a People Inc. video presented at a TEDx “Ideas Worth Spreading” nonprofit event. People Inc. “Where your world opens up.” is Western New York's leading non-profit human services agency. They help seniors, families and people with disabilities live more healthy, independent, and productive lives. Visit https://youtu.be/qjwVUZ0e4rw to watch the video.

QBS has employed two developmentally disabled individuals, Theresa and Steven, for more than 10 years. According to Kathie Hartmans, president (and Treasurer on the PIA Board), they bring a positive energy to the company and having them come to work every day is rewarding both from their work contributions, to the warm camaraderie they foster among the company’s employees. “They are family, and I can’t imagine Theresa and Steven not being with us,” said Kathie.

People Inc.’s business services ensure that individuals with developmental disabilities secure and maintain meaningful, competitive employment. Not only do they work with businesses in Western New York and Rochester to employ individuals, but they also create jobs around their talents and interests.

Many PIA members employ individuals with disabilities through various agencies. If you are interested in learning more about working with People Inc. for your staffing needs, call (716) 817-7400. We know you'll be glad you did!
